Great Game Of Canada

First published in 1973 by Irwin Toy, Ltd., Toronto, Ontario, under license from Seven Tours, this interesting and elaborate bilingual map game was donated to the Museum in 1982. There are 80 plus items included in the box for use in the play of this game. The cardboard box (33.4cm long x 45.6cm wide x 4cm high) features a photo of a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman in a full dress uniform, holding a standard on a staff. This illustration, is well known in Canada because it often appears in relation to an annual RCMP event - The Musical Ride. Also on the box top are photos of various land marks across Canada.

The game board (45.3cm long x 62.5cm wide when unfolded) is a stylized map of Canada. Each of the provinces and territories are in a different color, with major cities indicated on the map in their approximate areas. Each of these cities are joined by lines indicating "modes of transportation". The key to these modes appears on the map in the upper right hand corner. The modes are: air, rail, auto, ferry. In addition, sketches of major landmarks and animals known to each area are printed in appropriate places on the map.

This is a game for 2 to 6 players. A 1.5cm wooden blue die with gold markings (in the photo above the box) is used to determine moves around the board. Players are designated by 6 plastic playing pieces (about 1cm thick and 4cm in diameter) each in the shape of a maple leaf - red, blue, green, yellow, orange, white - placed on the bottom of the board in the photo.

Play involves the use of different types of bilingually printed cardboard cards - pictured in the photo above the board. These cards are:
