This bilingual game was based upon an adventure series telecast from 1977 through 1978. There was also a major motion picture titled: The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams.
The game was produced by Waddington's House Of Games (Canada) in 1978. The game (box 41cm x 21cm x 4cm) pictured to the left was donated to the Museum in 1991. Both the telecast series and the motion picture were based upon a real person - Grizzly Adams (1812-1860). Adams spent time in the Sierra Nevada mountains (U.S.) capturing animals and selling them to zoos. He opened a zoo in San Francisco. He died while on tour with P.T. Barnum.
On the telecast viewers were informed that "With the help of a friend named Mad Jack and an Indian blood brother, Nakuma, Grizzly build a sturdy cabin and determined to live in harmony with nature. A grizzly bear cub (Ben) that he had rescued from a ledge became his roommate."
The telecast series cast included:
Grizzly Adams - Dan Haggerty (a real life animal trainer who turned actor - in center of game box)
Mad Jack - Denver Pyle (in right circle on game box)
Nakuma - Don Shanks (in left circle on game box)
Ben - a bear who was Adams constant companion
The board pictured to the right is 40cm square x 2cm. The game is a simple "track" game for 2 to 6 players. Bilingual instructions are included with the game.
Markers used in the game are 3cm cardboard cutouts of the main characters and animals. Each cutout fits into a plastic base which enables it to stand on the board.
A chance device enables movement on the "track", however a player can go in many directions since the path has numerous intersections.
Stopping at one of the yellow circles enables a play to collect a certain number of points for accomplishing a task. Stopping at a "red arrow" invokes another type of action related to the red circle next to the cabin.
The winner is the player who has collected the most points and returned "home" to the "cabin" in the center of the board in order "to live in harmony with nature".
