Great Ape Game

Great Ape Game

This Milton Bradley bilingual game was issued in Canada in 1975, and was donated to the Museum in 1991.

The game is based upon a television cartoon series which was part of the "Tom and Jerry Cartoon Series". The Great Ape was telecast from 1975 thorough 1978. The cartoon followed the high jinks of Ape (voice of Bob Holt) and his talking dog friend Beegle Beagle (voice of Marty Ingles) as they drove around America looking for adventure. The carton was a Hanna-Barber production, and the Ape was described in the theme song as over 40 feet high and a 2000 pound super strong guy!

The game board as may be seen in the photograph to the right was a typical "track" game. However, one difference is that there is a "background" insert that is placed perpendicular to the playing service to offer the two to four players "atmosphere". Some people refer to this as a 3D game board. The graphic of "Ape" in relation to the board re-affirms the notion of the central character being over 40 feet high!

Playing pieces are four plastic markers in the shape of chess pawns - one color for each player - yellow, green, red, blue. A chance device was used to determine action on the board.
