Paul Brewster (1898-?)

The most prolific folklorist of games has been Paul G. Brewster. Over some 40 years, he conducted research and wrote more than fifty articles and monographs about games from the point of view of the folklorist. His publications have appeared in a variety of journals throughout the world and offer much information that is not available elsewhere. His article on collecting games offers some insight into his "modus operandi" and his rationale for the study of games.

Brewster's work on games is somewhat atypical within the field folklore. The customary approach for folklore researchers had been to work with traditional games of children, rather than adult games, and to work directly with children as informants, rather than to derive material from secondary sources. Brewster did both – he searched the literature and conducted interviews in the field. The following is a bibliography of many of the articles and monographs written by Brewster from 1939 until 1965. Those in the list that are highlighted have been scanned and are available for reading on this Website.
