Alphie's Word Game

This Canadian bilingual wordgame was donated to the Museum in 1983, but was available to the public in the 1970s.

The game was offered to consumers as an advertisement for Alphie's Noodle Soup - noodles shaped as letters of the alphabet in the soup.

The cardboard game board (24.4cm long x 21.8cm wide) includes 121 cells in an 11x11 matrix. There are 16 red squares with a drawing of Alphie in a double concentric pattern around a central floral square. These squares count towards point accumulation during play of the game.

The 52 playing pieces are 1.8cm square cardboard letter tiles with a black alphabet letter printed on one side. In addition, there are two cardboard tile holders 4.5cm long x 12.7cm wide (top left of photograph).

The sheet at the right of the photograph offers detailed instructions in both English and French and includes information on how to set up the game and make use of the tile holders. There are a number of illustrations on the sheet as to how to play the game. Play starts by one player placing a letter tile on the center square of the board. A second player then places a tile next to it in either a horizontal or vertical direction. The game is for two players who alternate placing tiles. Each tries to use their tiles to make words in a "crossword" fashion.
