WORD GAMES

Playing games with language has been a continuous recreation activity since ancient times. Such activities as riddles, puns, and "double entendres" are common in many languages. During contemporary times a host of boxed language games concerned with sentences, words, and alphabetic letters have become popular. Many of these are variations on the well known and well used "crossword puzzle".

The following offers examples of many different types of word games in the Museum collection. Click on a picture below to go to a page about that particular game, or a group of games. For example, clicking on "Scrabble" will take you to a number of pages each of which describes a version for a specific audience, adults, travelers, children, players with visual limitations, and the like.
