Q & A Game Consol

This 1980 game was donated to the Museum by the manufacturer Selchow & Righter in 1981.

The plastic case is 26cm long x 20.5cm wide x 4cm high, with a screen 19cm x 14cm. There are 20 keys on the keyboard. The 10 round beige keys are numbered 0 through 9. Five red oval keys are lettered A though D. Five additional red oval keys are labeled Score, Wrong, Right, Pass, Clear, Enter. On the lower right side of the plastic case is an 4 position switch marked: Off, On, Single, Double. In the rear of the case a back plate held by 5 screws holds a 9volt battery.

How to play the game

Two printed spiral-bound books are included with the game. The 64 page Brain Power Book includes general and trivia questions on a range of topics, and the 96 page Word Power Book includes questions on word meanings and origins. To play, a player places one of the books on the indented area on the game case, and uses the appropriate numbered keys and the "Enter" key to indicate the question-set being used. Similarly, the number keys indicate the question to be answered, while the keys lettered "A through D" indicate the answers - like a multiple-choice test! The chip holds the correct answer in memory. A player enters the question number and chooses an answer - the screen indicates if the answer was correct. A play may ask for cumulative score by pressing the "Score" key.

In dual play mode (two players), the second player may challenge the first player's answer to a question by pressing the "Wrong" key or "Right" key and thus adding to the second player's score. If a player does not know the answer, the "Pass" key may be used. The "Clear" key is used to erase a key pressed in error before the "Enter" key is pressed.
