Sesame Street Dominoes

Sesame Street Domino box

This set was donated to the Museum in 1987 by the Canadian manufacturer Whitman Golden, Ltd. The game was produced under license from the Western Publishing Company Inc., Racine, Wisconsin. The drawings on the box of Bert, Ernie, and Cookie Monster clearly identify that the contents relate to the popular children's educational television program "Sesame Street". However, the word "dominoes" is most prominent on the box cover, yet there are no pictures of typical dominoes or domino pips!

Unlike the "Picture Matching Domino" set in this Website section, the Sesame domino set is different. It is not two sets in one. As can be seen from the colorful picture on the box top, the tiles being used only show pictures. There are no domino pips.

Along with information about the contents on the box top is a sentence which indicates that this is a game for children from age four years and up.

Sesame dominoes

Within the box, are five sheets of six tiles. The sheets are stamped and perforated, so the tiles can be separated. Each tile is made of thick cardboard and is approximately 8cm long x 3.8cm wide. There are 28 tiles in the box, designed and printed with pictures of the colorful characters children usual see on the Sesame street television program. The backs of each tile are white. The front side of each tile is divided by a black line, and each half has a brightly colored picture.

As may be seen in both photographs, the tile pictures are the pictures of Sesame Street characters. Play of the game would be one of the variants of a game of Western dominoes, except children use the pictures rather than domino pips. After playing this game for a time, young players might be introduced to playing with a set with domino pips.
