Floor Dominoes

Floor Dominooes

Purchased by the Museum in 1972, the set pictured on the left is a standard set of Western dominoes. It was manufactured by Community Playthings, Rifton, New York.

The set includes 30 dominoes in a plain heavy cardboard container that is 24cm long x 43.2cm wide x 6.8cm deep. The container has a flap-like lid attached along the back. The lid tucks in at the front of the container. The lid top has the manufacturer's name, address, a logo, printed in red. The container bottom has a circular red stamp. The box interior is brown. Blue-white textured flaps folds over from exterior, on the vertical sides along the length of the container.

Each solid wooden domino tile is 11.4cm long x 5.7cm wide x 2.6cm high, and made of a hard wood such as maple. The sides of each tile are rounded, and the entire tile has been smoothed for easy grasping and use in play of the game. Each tile is stained tan with a wood stain. The top of each tile is divided by a brown line stamped into the top surface. Brown dots are stamped into this surface on either side of the line. Blanks are included. Dots represent a number from 1 to 6.

These dominoes are called "floor" dominoes, because they are intended to be used for a standard game which is played on the floor, rather than on a table. They can also be used on a beach, or some other dry and large surface!
